MAAMBA ENERGY TO INJECT 700MW INTO NATIONAL GRID AS EXPANSION PROJECTS ADVANCE

Maamba Energy Limited is set to significantly increase electricity supply to Zambia with the development of additional thermal and solar power capacity expected to come online this year.

Maamba Energy Limited Chief Executive Officer, Retired Lieutenant, Colonel Cyrus Minwalla, said the company is currently constructing Phase II of its thermal power plant, which will add 300 megawatts (MW) to the existing 300MW from Phase I.

Speaking during a regulatory visit of the energy projects in Sinazongwe district, by a team from the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), Retd. Lt. Col Minwalla said the thermal expansion is already more than halfway complete, with works at over 65 percent done.

“Mamba Energy, as you are aware, is constructing the Phase II thermal power plant which will have an additional 300 megawatt power. So our existing Phase I is 300MW. With the Phase II power of 300M, we will be injecting 600MW into the national grid this year,” he explained.

He added that the company is also establishing a 100MW solar power plant, which is expected to be completed by July, 2026.

“In addition, Mamba Energy is also constructing and establishing a 100MW solar power plant, and this will be ready by July. With the 100MW of solar and the 600MW of thermal this year, we will be injecting 700MW into the national grid,” Retd. Lt. Col Minwalla stated.

And ERB Director- Licensing Naomi Fulaza, said the inspection forms part of the regulator’s mandate to monitor licensed energy projects.

Mrs. Fulaza noted that Maamba Energy remains a licensed operator under the ERB and is already contributing significantly to the national grid.

The expansion projects at Maamba Energy are expected to play a key role in strengthening Zambia’s electricity supply and diversifying the country’s energy mix, particularly as demand continues to grow.
