Mine-Worker Unions are optimistic that the gradual return of stability to the mining sector will translate into better salary increments for unionized workers as negotiations are set to begin in October this year.
National Union of Miners and Allied Workers-NUMAW president Saul Simujika says the unions have made a collective resolve to negotiate with high expectations this year following the dawning stability of the mining sector.
He cites the resuscitation of Mopani, and Konkola Copper Mines, Luanshya Shaft 28, NFCA South East Ore body expansion, and FQM Investment among others, as signs of improving productivity.
Mr. Simujika says ramping up production will require a corresponding improvement to the conditions of service beyond what was offered in 2024.
He adds that while the unions expect that companies like KCM may take a little while to settle but that the mining sector should generally prepare to offer proper salary increments to unionized workers for the 2025 collective bargaining agreement.
