Sinomine Kitumba Minerals Launches $600 Million Copper Mining stripping project in Zambia

Zambia’s mining sector received a major boost today as Sinomine Kitumba Minerals launched its $600 million open-pit mining project in Mumbwa district of Central Province, expected to significantly increase the country’s copper output and renewable energy capacity.

Speaking at the launch , Mines and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe said the Kitumba Mine will process 4.5 million tonnes of copper ore annually, producing 50,000 tonnes of refined copper. “This project brings us closer to our national target of 3 million tonnes annual copper production by 2031,” Mr.Kabuswe stated.

The investment will create 2,500 jobs and includes construction of a 50-megawatt solar plant to power operations.

“This is a model for sustainable mining that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility,” the Minister added.

Sinomine Chairman Wang Pingwei reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Zambia’s development, calling the project “a milestone in our partnership with Zambia.”

The mine represents one of the largest mining investments under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.
