Konkola Copper Mines, through its KCM SmelterCo Limited subsidiary company, has installed a new oxygen pumping system worth $41,000 as the company targets to increase its oxygen productivity to adequately meet the oxygen demands for both KCM and Government hospitals.
KCM SmelterCo Director Ellie Sampa has disclosed that the new system has the capacity to produce 750 tonnes of oxygen in a day with 98.5% purity and can fill up to 30 oxygen cylinders within an hour.
Mr. Sampa said the old system produced about 12, 935 oxygen cylinders at the rate of filling 10 cylinders within an hour, in a period of 13 months worth an estimated amount of $250, 000 which were supplied for free to both KCM and Government health facilities at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, as part of company’s Corporate Social Responsibility.
He said the company will continue making efforts to ensure that critical medical commodities like oxygen are readily available in hospitals not only in times like those of the Covid-19 pandemic at no cost.
